After appearing on the Brazilian edition of Computer Arts (November/2008) – in the cover article “Design/Animation/Illustration: 54 tips from the best pros that you can take to your next projects” – and its British counterpart (May/2009), we were invited to create the April 2009’s cover for the Brazilian one. The brief: show what it is like to work as a freelancer (“dreaming of working on your own terms”, says the finished cover). The guy sleeps over his computer surrounded by the things he likes while Mr.Green’s – the sour, ghoulish Michael Scott-style boss – hand tries to wake him up.

One of our rules as a collective is: everyone should do one’s own experimental work in one’s spare time. So, Rogério Puhl has been developing new illustrations for the collaborative website Camiseteria for quite some time. And they are really awesome – sixteen of his designs have been approved by the site’s users. Order yours now: http://www.camiseteria.com.br

Background illustration for a Banco do Brasil ad, comissioned by Artplan advertising agency. Estúdio Alice was invited along a lot of designers and illustrators known nationwide, so we felt very proud to be part of it. We chose vivacious colors to convey the “Brazil-ness” we’d like to show.

Ogilvy One called us up to provide illustrations for the “Truth and Myths About Hellmann’s” campaign. It should prove that mayo is not the greatest villain of healthy eating habits. The campaign deals with four subjects: salmonella, calorie bombs, colestherol and trans fat.. Our illustrations were used in four animations, which you can see in Hellmann’s website: www.hellmanns.com.br/mitoseverdades

Based on the style we’d developed for other projects, we were invited by Agência Que to create a new illustration for Onda Azul Foundation. The theme: if you don’t do anything to change the world, pollution does. It’s something to think about, and our illustration tries to say it out loud.

We did two illustrations for Capricho Magazine. It was a new experience for the studio, as we had to illustrate a feature called “Explain, Please”. The first one (for issue #1065, march 1, 2009) was about recycling – “where does the garbage go to, anyway?” – and the second one was about Darwin’s theory of evolution (issue #1066, march 15 2009).
Work + Fun:
Alice mixes references. It’s good and evil. Right and wrong. Coke and Menthos, Yin and Yang. Monty Python and The Godfather. Alice is pragmatic in what it does, and creative in what it finishes. It’s like an avatar for four people. Different creatures that are united by some things they all like, but who make an effort to grow based on their different tastes. Everyday they unite for something cooler than merely working. They have different assignments in what they call a studio. Is it work!? Yes, but it has to be fun. If it’s not fun, then it’s not worth it. When Alice was conceived, this was written in the manual. There has to be work – it has to be fun. Alice searches for references. Alice creates conceptually. Gives form in a fun way. Alice likes to discuss possibilities and strategies. Alice knows how to use cool words. Alice likes to draw colorfully. Alice wants to provoke you.
